Seeding Sites, Not Just Yards
Builder and commercial hydroseeding in Albany deals with ground most homeowners never think about: new subdivision lots before closing, roadside shoulders, detention and retention basins, utility trenches, school and office grounds, and the acres of graded soil around new commercial buildings. A hydroseed truck can cover a large area in a day, and the fiber mulch holds soil in place while the grass gets started. For general contractors and site managers who need a stabilized site to satisfy a stormwater permit, close out a job or get a certificate of occupancy, that speed is the point.
Why stabilization matters here
Federal Clean Water Act rules require stormwater permit coverage for construction disturbing at least an acre, and for smaller sites that belong to a bigger planned development reaching that size. Those permits must require erosion and sediment controls, and the federal minimum calls for stabilizing disturbed ground immediately whenever work on it stops with no restart planned within 14 days. In the Capital District that matters most from late spring through fall, when July averages about 4.55 inches of rain at the airport and summer storms can strip a graded pad in an afternoon. Hydroseed and hydromulch are among the quickest ways to get a large disturbed area covered.
Soils that fight back
Many Capital District sites sit on glacial lake sediments. On the sandy side, the old Lake Albany sands drain fast and blow around when dry, so seed needs a heavier mulch rate and a tackifier to stay put. On the clay side, soils like the USDA Hudson series have a silty clay subsoil described as firm, sticky and plastic, with medium to very high runoff potential. After mass grading, that subsoil is often what is left at the surface. It crusts, sheds water and grows poor grass unless topsoil goes back on. We look at the finished grade before seeding and tell the site manager whether the seed will actually take.
Working with a short season
The USDA puts the frost-free season for Hudson Valley soils like the Hudson series at 120 to 180 days. With roughly 59 inches of snow a winter, sites that finish grading in late October or November rarely grow grass before freeze-up. For those jobs we apply hydromulch or install erosion control blankets to hold the ground through winter and come back to seed in spring or late summer. We would rather tell a builder that up front than spray seed that sits dormant on frozen ground and washes off in the March thaw. Get a free estimate
Fiber mulch rates on big areas
The amount of mulch in the slurry matters more on a site than on a yard. A flat lot with good topsoil can take a standard rate. A long, gentle slope, a sandy pad that blows around when it dries, or a basin side that will see runoff needs more fiber and tackifier. Our quotes state the mulch rate by area so you can compare bids on equal terms.
What we seed
Residential lots for builders, often in batches as houses close. Detention basin bottoms and side slopes, which need seed mixes that tolerate both standing water and dry spells. Roadside shoulders and ditches along new subdivision streets. Utility corridors and pipeline restoration. Commercial lawns, parking lot islands and the open areas around warehouses and schools. On basin slopes and ditches we often pair hydroseed with blankets or bonded fiber matrix, which is covered on our erosion control page.
Choosing among hydroseeding contractors
When you compare hydroseeding contractors for a commercial job, ask how they set the mulch rate, whether they adjust the seed mix to the soil, whether they handle silt fence and blankets themselves, and what they do when the season is too late for seed. Hydroseeding companies that only spray lawns may not be set up for basins and ditches. We handle the site work around the seeding too, so the same crew can install perimeter silt fence early in the job and come back for final stabilization.
Seed mixes for site work
Commercial jobs do not always need a manicured lawn mix. Roadsides, basin slopes and back-of-lot areas that will rarely be mowed often do better with tougher, lower-maintenance blends heavy in tall and fine fescues and perennial ryegrass for quick cover. Basin bottoms that stay wet after storms need species that tolerate wet feet. Lawn areas in front of an office or school get the same cool-season turf blends we use on homes. We match the mix to how each part of the site will be used and maintained, and list the mixes on the quote.
Coordination on site
We work from your site plan and stormwater plan, check access for the truck and water source, and schedule around paving, landscaping and final grading. If an inspector flags an area, we come back to touch it up. Invoicing is itemized by area so you can match it to your schedule of values.

Builder & Commercial Hydroseeding Questions
When does a site need a stormwater permit?
Under federal rules, permit coverage is needed when construction disturbs an acre or more, or when a smaller site belongs to a bigger planned development. Your engineer or the state permitting agency confirms what applies to your project.
How fast do disturbed areas have to be stabilized?
At minimum, federal rules call for immediate stabilization once work stops with no restart planned within 14 days. Your permit may be more specific, so check the stormwater plan.
Can you seed a site in November?
Usually not for grass that will grow before winter. We can apply hydromulch or blankets to hold the soil and seed later.
Do you seed detention basins?
Yes. Basin bottoms and side slopes get seed mixes suited to wet and dry conditions, with blankets on the steeper slopes.
How many acres can you seed in a day?
It depends on access, water supply and the mulch rate. We give a realistic schedule after the site walk.
