Rural Lawns Between River and Lake
Hydroseeding in Stillwater covers rural lots, lake homes and river frontage. The Hudson River forms the town's eastern line, Saratoga Lake touches its northwest corner near Brown's Beach and Snake Hill, and Saratoga National Historical Park, where part of the Battle of Saratoga was fought, lies in the northeast. Water covers about 5 percent of the town.
Steady growth
Stillwater grew 10.2 percent between 2000 and 2010 and another 8.9 percent by 2020, reaching 9,022 people. The town also shares the Luther Forest Technology Campus with Malta. Growth like that brings new homes on larger rural lots, which suit hydroseeding because covering big areas with sod gets expensive.
Clay in the Hudson valley
Much of the Hudson valley floor is mantled with lake clay. The USDA's Hudson soil series formed in clayey and silty lake sediments and has medium to very high runoff potential. On clay lots, we loosen the surface before seeding, add topsoil if the grade has been stripped, and slope the yard away from the house so water doesn't sit.
River and lake edges
Lots on Route 4 near the Hudson, or along NY 9P near Saratoga Lake, often slope toward the water. We use silt fence during construction and erosion control blankets on any steep bank, and keep seeding to the lawn side.
History on the ground
Peter Schuyler built Fort Ingoldsby here in 1709, and a replica now houses the Stillwater Blockhouse Museum. Land near the battlefield park is rural and open. If you are converting an open field into lawn, the job starts with grading and rock removal.

Stillwater Questions
Is hydroseeding practical for a two-acre rural lawn?
Yes. Large areas are where hydroseeding makes the most sense compared to sod.
My new lot is heavy clay. What prep does it need?
Loosen the surface, add topsoil where it is thin, and set the grade to shed water away from the house.
I'm near Saratoga Lake. Do I need silt fence?
During construction, it is a good idea on the lake side to keep sediment out of the water.
Can you turn an old hayfield into lawn?
Yes. We mow or clear it, grade, remove rocks, add topsoil where needed and seed.
