Commercial Ground and Lakeshore Lawns
Hydroseeding in Malta splits into two quite separate kinds of jobs. On one side is the 1,414-acre Luther Forest Technology Campus, shared with Stillwater and designed for semiconductor and nanotechnology manufacturing. GlobalFoundries moved its headquarters to its Malta facility in 2021. On the other is Saratoga Lake along the town's eastern edge and Round Lake to the west, ringed with homes where runoff goes straight into the water.
Commercial and campus work
Large commercial sites disturb acres of soil at once. Under New York's construction stormwater permit, any project disturbing one acre or more needs a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan. Hydroseeding is one of the most practical ways to stabilize big graded areas, swales and detention basin slopes, because one truck can spray a large area in a single day. On steeper basin side slopes we use bonded fiber matrix or blankets.
Lake lots
Homes around Saratoga Lake, Round Lake and Little Round Lake have lawns that slope toward the water. When those lawns are bare after construction or a septic job, rain carries soil into the lake. We keep silt fence or sediment logs along the shore side during work and get the area seeded and mulched quickly.
A growing town
Malta grew 16 percent between 2010 and 2020. New subdivisions along Route 9 and near the Northway mean new lawns on freshly graded lots. We fine grade, add topsoil where needed and hydroseed.
Old forest ground
Luther Forest started as a reforestation project before becoming a rocket fuel test station and later the tech campus. Wooded lots cleared for homes often have thin, acidic topsoil and many roots. Removing debris and adding topsoil before seeding helps a lawn get established on that kind of ground.

Malta Questions
Can you hydroseed detention basins and swales on a commercial site?
Yes. Basin side slopes usually get a bonded fiber matrix or blanket so the seed survives the first storms.
My lawn slopes down to Saratoga Lake. What stops the soil from ending up in the lake?
We set sediment control along the shore before work and cover bare soil with seed and mulch as quickly as possible.
I cleared trees for my house lot. What does the soil need?
Usually root and debris removal, some topsoil and a bit of lime based on a soil test before seeding.
Do large commercial sites need a SWPPP?
In New York, construction disturbing one or more acres needs DEC permit coverage and a SWPPP.
