Bringing Tired Colonie Lawns Back
Hydroseeding in Colonie is often less about bare dirt from new construction and more about renovating yards that have been lawns for fifty years or more. The town grew from about 17,000 people in 1930 to more than 69,000 by 1970, and by 1980 suburban development had largely filled the community. Many of those lawns were seeded once and never renewed.
Why old lawns thin out
Soil under an older lawn gets compacted from foot traffic, cars and mowers. Shade from trees planted in the 1960s now covers what used to be full sun. Grass types that were common then are not always what suits the yard today. A renovation might mean core aeration, a light layer of topsoil, and a hydroseed mix matched to the shade and use of each part of the yard.
Sandy pockets and small creeks
When Glacial Lake Albany drained, the runoff carved a set of small creeks in Colonie, including Patroon Creek, Sand Creek, Lisha Kill, Shaker Creek and the Salt Kill. Yards that back up to those ravines can lose soil down the bank every spring. On those edges we use hydromulch at a heavier rate or erosion control blankets, then seed through them.
Farmland under the airport and the subdivisions
Through the 1930s Colonie was mostly farmland, and much of the old Shaker farm land in the middle of town is now Albany International Airport. Former farm fields that became house lots usually have decent loam under them, but builders often stripped and sold the topsoil. If a yard seems to grow nothing, a soil check is a good first step.
Parks and big fields
Colonie maintains large public grounds such as the 130-acre Crossings Park and the 160-acre Mohawk River Park and Pool. Large open areas like those, along with commercial lots along the Route 7 and Route 9 corridors, are where hydroseeding saves the most compared to sod.

Colonie Questions
Can you hydroseed over my existing thin lawn?
Yes. We usually aerate or lightly scarify first so the seed reaches soil, then spray the slurry over the thin areas.
My yard backs onto a creek ravine. What stops the bank from washing out?
A heavier mulch layer or an erosion control blanket holds the soil while grass roots in. Very steep banks may need a bonded fiber matrix.
Do shady Loudonville yards need a different seed?
Usually. We lean on fine fescues for heavy shade and keep the sunnier parts on a mix that handles wear.
Is it worth bringing in topsoil for an old lawn?
If the soil is compacted or thin, a modest layer of screened topsoil makes a noticeable difference in how the new grass fills in.
