Greening Up a River City
Hydroseeding in Rensselaer is often part of redevelopment. The city sits on the east bank of the Hudson, across from Albany, and for more than a century its riverfront was dominated by chemical plants, ending with BASF, which closed at the end of 2000. That left large industrial parcels to redevelop, and new apartment buildings, parks and plants have gone up since.
Flat by the river, steep inland
Rensselaer is flat along its western and southern areas, while the center and north slope steeply to the east. Hillside yards in the Rensselaer Hills neighborhoods need extra erosion protection when seeded: heavier mulch, blankets or bonded fiber matrix on the steeper faces.
Built-up shoreline
In 1903, the channel separating Van Rensselaer Island from the mainland was filled with sand dredged from the Hudson. Sandy fill like that drains fast and holds little water or nutrients. On lots built over fill, we add topsoil before hydroseeding and set up a watering plan that keeps the seedbed damp.
Redevelopment sites
Projects like the apartments at DeLaet's Landing and the Barnet Mills project bring construction, regrading and new landscape areas near the river. Hydroseeding is a fast way to stabilize graded slopes and open areas, and silt fence keeps sediment from reaching the Hudson during work.
Riverfront parks
The city has parks along the river, including the Hudson Riverfront Art Park and the Waterfront Esplanade at DeLaet's Landing, and a planned riverfront trail of more than a mile. Public grounds like these need durable turf that holds up to foot traffic.

Rensselaer Questions
Can you seed graded areas on a redevelopment site?
Yes. Hydroseeding is one of the faster ways to stabilize large graded areas and slopes.
My yard is on the hill. Will seed wash away?
On steeper ground we use blankets or a bonded fiber matrix to hold the seed in place.
Is the soil near the river sandy?
Some of it is fill, including dredged sand. We add topsoil where needed before seeding.
Do you install silt fence near the Hudson?
Yes. It goes in on the river side before grading starts.
